Reduce food waste

October 1, 2024

ABC SE radio interview with Kathryn Maxwell, SHASA President, 30 September 2024.

SHASA strongly supports efforts to reduce food waste.  Producing food is very resource intensive – water, fuel, fertiliser.  We need to minimise food waste.

Below is a summary of information to reduce food waste.

Causes of food waste

The long supply lines for the big supermarkets.  Food is harvested, transported to a major distribution centre in cities like Sydney, then transported to the supermarkets.

How many people have bought veggies like beans that then go off in a couple of days?

How to reduce food waste

  • If you buy from the big supermarkets buy smaller quantities of food more often.  I shop every 3 days.
  • Don’t be sucked into buying 2 for X$s when you are only likely to eat one of them.
  • If you can buy from farmers markets, the food is locally grown, much fresher and will last much longer in your fridge.

To reduce food waste and feed families in need SHASA, in partnership with the South Coast Community Kitchen, Red Door Cafe Anglican Parish collect food from Woolworths Moruya and Coles Batemans Bay.

We also receive food donations from SAGE, Southern Life Pantry and members of the public.  If you have a glut of fruit and/or vegetables, or unwanted pantry items, drop them off to 3 Jeffery Place Moruya.

We provide 27 families in need with a bag of food every Monday. We have a team of volunteers packing and delivering our food in EVAN – our electric van.  Its so ergonomic and cheap to run.

The South Coast Community Kitchen provide food to 40 families in need in the Bateman’s Bay area.
